Lesson Plans for use with FEL
Language Arts/ Grades 6-8
This lesson correlates with F.S.S.S Writing Standard 1:
LA.B.1.3 - The student uses writing effectively.
.1 - organizes information before writing according to the type and purpose of writing.
.2 - drafts and revises writing that: is focused, purposeful, and reflects insight into the writing situation; conveys a sense of completeness and wholeness with adherence to the main idea; has an organizational pattern that provides for a logical progression of ideas; has support that is substantial, specific, relevant, concrete, and/or illustrative; demonstrates a commitment to and an involvement with the subject; has clarity in presentation of ideas; uses creative writing strategies appropriate to the purpose of the paper; demonstrates a command of language (word choice) with freshness of expression; has varied sentence structure and sentences that are complete except when fragments are used purposefully; and has few, if any, convention errors in mechanics, usage, and punctuation.
.3 - produces final documents that have been edited for: correct spelling; correct punctuation, including commas, colons, and semicolons; correct capitalization; effective sentence structure; correct common usage, including subject/verb agreement, common noun/pronoun agreement, common possessive forms, and with a variety of sentence structure, including parallel structure; and correct formatting.

LA.B.2.3 - The student writes to communicate ideas and information effectively.
.3 - selects and uses appropriate formats for writing, including narrative, persuasive, and expository formats, according to the intended audience, purpose, and occasion.
Science/ Grades 6-8
This lesson correlates with F.S.S.S. Processes of Life Standard 2:
SC.G.2.3 - The student understands the consequences of using limited natural resources.
.2 - knows that all biotic and abiotic factors are interrelated and that if one factor is changed or removed, it impacts the availability of other resources within the system.
.3 - knows that a brief change in the limited resources of an ecosystem may alter the size of a population or the average size of individual organisms and that long-term change may result in the elimination of animal and plant populations inhabiting the Earth.
.4 - understands that humans are part of an ecosystem and their activities may deliberately or inadvertently alter the equilibrium in ecosystems.
History/ Economics / Language Arts/ Grades 9-12
Great Depression Paper
U.S. History: Time, Continuity, and Change
Standard 5 - The student understands U.S. history from 1880 to the present day.
SS.A.5.4. - understands social transformations that took place in the 1920s and 1930s, the principal political and economic factors that led to the Great Depression, and the legacy of the Depression in American society.
Economics:
Standard 2 - The student understands the characteristics of different economic systems and institutions.
SS.D.2.4.3 - understands how government taxes, policies, and programs affect individuals, groups, businesses, and regions.
Language Arts: Writing
Standard 2 - The student constructs meaning from a wide range of texts.
LA.A.2.4.4 - locates, gathers, analyzes, and evaluates written information for a variety of purposes, including research projects, real-world tasks, and self-improvement.
Standard 2 - The student writes to communicate ideas and information effectively.
LA.B.2.4.4. - selects and uses a variety of electronic media, such as the Internet, information services, and desktop publishing software programs, to create, revise, retrieve, and verify information.
Using the following sources from the Florida Electronic Library, write a short paper explaining the causes and effects of the Great Depression in American society.
Your paper should follow the MLA format using parenthetical documentation which can be found on the "Tools" page of the FEL web site.
Be sure to include the following resources and information:
• two photographs-
1) one from the Florida on Florida collection depicting a Great Depression Era project or activity
2) one depicting a Great Depression Era project or activity from another part the country
• two periodicals
• one reference book
